Open moulding

HAND LAY-UP

Hand lay-up is the most common fiber application technique, as it requires the least amount of equipment. Fiber reinforcements are placed by hand in a mould, and resin is then applied with a brush or roller. Although the tooling costs are low, this technology is being discontinued due to higher VOC emissions, and low repeatability/consistency for serial production.

PRESS MOULDING

Press moulding is a technique mainly used for thermoset moulding in which the laminate is placed in an open mould cavity. After lay-up, the mould is closed and pressurized heat is applied to cure the material.
